What to Wear at the Lake

Living in Minnesota for several years has taught me the importance of spending time by the water. Friday afternoons bring a mass exodus from the city and everyone heads for their nearest lake for some summer R&R. When the good weather only lasts a few months, you bet I will be spending it near a dock somewhere.

Dressing for the lake is much different than what I wear in the city. At the lake, everything is casual and about being comfortable after a great day on the water. I make sure to fill my suitcase with many different options, as I never know what the temperamental Midwestern weather fronts will bring. One minute I could be wearing only a swimsuit and the next reaching for a cozy sweatshirt. I’ve made a list of what I always have in my lake bag as well as my picks to inspire you to have a lakeside weekend of your own!

   1. Cotton Romper

Finding that perfect romper is a rarity for me (#tallgirlproblems) but when I do I basically never wear anything else. I love this Sperry version for two reasons- firstly, it’s striped (my favorite) and secondly it looks comfortable and easy to throw on as a swimsuit coverup. Done and done.

2. Off-Shoulder Top & Patterned Shorts

I love patterned shorts paired with flowy tops. This combination from Madewell and J.Crew are perfect for apres-lake drinks or dinner, not to mention are perfect colors for July 4th!

3. The Perfect Lake Shoe: Two Versions

When at the lake all I want (when I do decide to put on shoes) is something comfortable and quick to put on. I have been a fan of Sperry’s boat shoes for a decade and swear by the versatility of their shoes. Once you break them in there are no better fit shoes and I always have these at the lake for hoping in and out of boats. For something a bit dressier in the evenings, I love a pair of lace-ups. These JCrew espadrilles are cute and feminine while also giving you that boho-chic style that looks so great in the summer time.

4. Cozy Sweatshirt

Ok, so this sweatshirt from Great Lakes Clothing Co may be state-specific, but how cute is it?! I love nothing more than cozying into a beloved sweatshirt while enjoying an outdoor bonfire or a late night boat ride. Does life get any better than that?

5. Dockside Accessories

The last items that I always make sure to pack for the lake are my lakeside accessories. Sunglasses are a must for me and I love these patterned cat-eye sunnies from Gentle Monster. If you haven’t checked this brand out yet, you must! They have so many funky yet feminine sunglasses in their collection. Another must have is a great beach bag. Things you can always find in mine are sunscreen, a great book, a beach towel, and snacks.

Life doesn’t get any better than when you are near water with friends. What do you pack when going to the lake or beach?
